What is Nagaracalled now?
What is Nagara called now? Well, my fellow history enthusiasts, the name of this fascinating city has undergone some changes over the years. During the period from 710 to 794, it was known as Heijo-kyo, as it served as the capital of Japan. However, today it goes by the name Nagara, earning the title of the “Buddhist Art Capital.” This shift in the capital’s location happened when it was moved from Fujiwara-kyo (which is now Kashihara City in Nagara Prefecture) to its current location, Nagara. This period in Japanese history, known as the Nagara period, held great significance, but eventually, the capital was relocated again to Heian-kyo, now called Kyoto, marking the end of Nagara’s role as the capital. It’s truly intriguing to delve into the historical changes that have shaped this city’s identity throughout the centuries. (Date of blog entry: 02-Sept-2010).
